Jack O. and the Tennessee Tearjerkers and River City Tanlines
Head to the Hi-tone (1913 Poplar ave.) for Jack O. and the Tennessee Tearjerkers and River City Tanlines. You probably need no introduction to either of these bands. Jack celebrated the release of Rat City back in September, and he also played last year’s New Year’s Eve show at the Hi-tone. River City Tanlines feature Alicja Trout (Mouserocket) on vocals and guitar, and Terrence Bishop and John Bonds (The Subteens) on bass and drums respectively. Doors open at 8:00pm for the Tigers and University of Charlotte game. If you buy a Miller Light during the game, you get a raffle ticket. The raffle will be announced at midnight for a ticket to the Tigers and University of Tennessee game on January 4th. There will also be a midnight champagne toast. Cover is $7 and the show is 18 and up.
P&H 90’s New Year’s Eve Party
Head to the P&H Cafe (1532 Madison Ave.) for a 90’s themed New Year’s party. Members of Fresh Flesh and Chinamen will be performing as Nirvana, The Warm Atlantic will be performing as Weezer, and Deal Me In will be performing as Blink 182. There will also be a DJ on hand playing 90’s music. Dressing up 90’s style in encouraged (in fact there will be a best dressed contest) and a midnight champagne toast. Cover is $5 and this show is 21 and up. Things will be kicking off at 9:00pm.
Punk Rock New Year’s at Murphy’s
Memphis’ favorite punk rock cover band Memphis Killharmonic will be playing Murphy’s (1589 Madison Ave.). Expect covers of Reagan Youth, The Misfits, The Riverdales, Fear, The Sex Pistols and more. They will be joined by Jacksonville, Alabama’s Street Shark. The show will kick off at 9:30pm. Cover is $5 and this show is 21 and up.
Also don’t forget….Little Rock, Arkansas’ Booyah! Dad will be playing the Hi-tone tonight with Dirty Streets and Hi-Electric! I can’t stress how awesome this show will be! Doors at 9:00pm, cover is $7 and this show is 18 and up.

Friday (December 30th) at the Hi-tone (1913 Poplar Ave.), Little Rock Arkansas’ Booyah! Dad returns to Memphis to play a show with the Dirty Streets and Hi-Electric. When they played the Buccaneer back in October, I was just blown away by how nutty of a live show these guys put on. I sent their singer and guitarist Lieutenant Top a few questions, which he was kind enough to answer:
MRC: Partying seems to be a predominant theme in Booyah! Dad’s music. How does Booyah! Dad prefer to party?
Lieutenant Top: We like to party anyway, anyhow, anywhere we choose.
MRC: Many of you are all parts of different bands. When do you know that a song written is a Booyah! Dad song?
LT: I write most of the songs and some of the parts, bring it to the guys and let them add their own flair to it. Within reason.
MRC: How long have you guys been playing out and how did you guys come together as a band?
LT: We’ve been playing out for a year now. When I moved to Little Rock in July 2010, I grabbed these two gentlemen and we proceeded to become the amorphous blob of everlasting party rock that we are today.
MRC: What have been some of the more memorable moments or shows for Booyah! Dad as a band?
LT: It would be the time that Rick Barton (Dropkick Murphys, Continental) called us a psychedelic B.T.O.
MRC: What can we expect from Booyah! Dad in 2012?
LT: 2012 will bring about a new record and a couple of shirts. Party.
MRC: How can people interested in your music get a hold of it?
LT: The best way to get our record is to go to booyahdad.bandcamp.com and download it for 5 smackeroos.
Doors open at 9:00pm, cover is $7, and this show is 18 and up.
Photos of Booyah! Dad from their October show at the Buccaneer:
Richard James and the Special Riders have been so good to you in 2011. Frankly, I’ve never seen a band who plays so prolificly, consistently put on such bad ass shows. They’ll be kicking things off at 9:30pm, and this show will be FREE! Mollie Fontaine Lounge is a 21 and up venue though.
Karaoke: El Karaoke Grande’s Karaoke Madness Venue: Murphy’s (1589 Madison Ave.)
Yes, I know it’s strange for this blog to be pimping a karaoke night, but there aren’t many karaoke nights like El Karaoke Grande’s Karaoke Madness. You wanna sing G.G. Allin? The Shaggs? “Disco Duck”? He has all of those as well as your regular karaoke fare. Karaoke Madness starts at 8:30 pm and is free (through bring some dollars to tip your K.J. if you wanna sing. El Karaoke Grande is using that money to buy new songs and lucha masks). Karaoke Madness is 21 and up.
Long time Memphis music fans might remember Brett Krock from his time with Eighty Katie or The Lights, but he’s been doing Good Luck Darkstar since 2008. Good Luck Darkstar plays straight up rock music with elements of power pop. (They’re huge ELO fans). They will be joined by locals The Allied Standard and The Warm Atlantic. The show starts at 9:00pm, is $5, and 18 and up.
Other options for Thursday
Mollie Fontaine Lounge (679 Adams Ave.) Witnesse, Handsome Mark 11:00pm, 21 and up, Free
Juicy Jim’s Pizzeria (551 S. Highland St.) Gaddafi Girls, Modern Convenience, Rubrics 10:00pm, 18 and up, $5
I probably owe the genius that is the Dirty Streets more coverage on this blog than I’ve given them. They are definitely not a whiny indie rock band. These guys play the sort of music that your dad used to get drunk and high to in the 70s. Add Little Rock, Arkansas’ Booyah! Dad (pictured above) to this bill, and I can assure you that your ears will still be ringing well into 2012. Memphis’ own Hi-Electric will also be performing. Doors at 9:00, cover is $7, 18 and up.
Yes, I know…..I’ve slacked all week (though I did lose one post to a frozen computer screen). I hope you all found your way to some great shows this week (Lucero and Amy LaVere, The Nots at the Lamplighter).
Looking for some fun to get into once you are done with your family? One Christmas tradition in Memphis for the last nine years now has been heading to the Hi-tone for Snowglobe‘s annual Christmas show!
Like last year, The Pirates will be opening tonight’s show! Doors are at 9:00 and the cover is $10! Hope to see you all tonight.
As always, remember to check Tennessee Trash for a more extensive show list.
The days leading up to Christmas have kept a lot of us (myself included) pretty busy. Let’s not forget that the holidays are actually supposed to be fun…and in the spirit of such…here are three Christmas parties happening this weekend.
Tonight at the Hi-tone, one of my absolutely favorite local bands, Tiger High, will be having their Christmas party. For a band that played their first show in March, this band has come out of the gates swinging this year. Their debut release, Myth Is This, is soon to get a CD release from Trashy Creatures Records with bonus tracks! They also made quite the impression at SoundLand’s Next Big Nashville festival back in September, getting a glowing review from My Old Kentucky blog.
Man Control is a relatively new band featuring James Goodwin and Dave Shouse (both of The New Mary Jane) and Robby Grant (of Vending Machine).
The Lamplighter Lounge (1702 Madison Ave.) Flaming A’s 10:00pm, 21 and up, Free
Tomorrow night (12/17) at the Hi-tone, Shangri-La will be having their Christmas party.
The Magic Kids will be headlining Shangri-La’s Christmas party tomorrow night at the Hi-tone.
Fraysia will also be playing, and DJ Buck Wilders will be spinning records. Admission is $5 and a can of food for the Mid-South Food Bank. The show starts at 9:00pm and is 18 and up.
Yeah, I might have slacked on the job this week, but if you check out Tennessee Trash then you will always find an up to date show list. If you want me to list your show on this blog, then contact me at Memphisrockcity@gmail.com. Hope to see you all out this weekend.
Unknown Hinson is playing tonight (12/10) at the Hi-tone (1913 Poplar Ave.). Fans of Squidbillies may know him as the voice of Early Cuyler. Unknown Hinson has been playing his unique brand of country music since the mid 90’s.
Tomorrow (12/11) at the Hi-tone Austin, Texas photo zine Rubberneck will be releasing their newest issue focusing on Gonerfest 8. Get Bent will also be sponsoring this show. Nashville bands Natural Child and Hans Condor will be performing with Memphis’ Sharp Balloons and Manatees. Doors open at 8:00pm. Cover is $7, 18 and up.
Before heading to the Hi-tone head to Murphy’s (1589 Madison) for a matinee show from The Bombay Alleys and Widows and Recluses. The show starts at 7:00 and is 21 and up.
For a more comprehensive show list, check out Tennessee Trash.
The Buccaneer (1368 Monroe Ave.) Staff 9:00pm, 21 and up, Cover Unknown
I’m sure these aren’t the only awesome shows happening this weekend. For a much more comprehensive list check out Tennessee Trash. If you want me to list your show on this site then e-mail me at Memphisrockcity@gmail.com. Hope to see you all out this weekend.
Excited about the recent addition of bike lanes on Madison? Do you like porn? Well there might just be an event right up your alley tonight….
Tonight at Five In One (423 N. Watkins) is Bike Smut, a traveling series of erotic bicycle themed films. There will be nudity in these films, so if you are offended by sex, you’ll probably want to sit this one out. Doors open at 8:00 and the films start showing at 9:30. Cover is a $5 donation to the traveling artists. This event is also sponsored by the folks at Live From Memphis. If you have any interest in this event, you should just go, because there are no DVDs. You have to be at a screening to see these films.
El Karaoke Grandetook last night off from his regular gig at Murphy’s to get his King Louie fix with Missing Monuments. The good news is…he rescheduled his amazing karaoke show for tonight. Those of you offended by porn, can head directly to Murphy’s (1589 Madison Ave.) for Karaoke Madness. If you want to watch Bike Smut, but would still like to sing a little Steely Dan tonight, fear not, Karaoke Madness will be going till 1:00am.
I know…I know….I’ve been slacking on the job a bit (though in my defense last week was a rather slow show week). Thankfully, there is plenty of music going on this week for you to occupy yourself….such as
King Louie’s current project Missing Monuments will be playing tomorrow night (12/7) at The Buccaneer (1368 Monroe Ave). When I hear Missing Monuments, I often think that their sound is what would happen if a lot of those snotty California punk bands would grow some stones and decide to start rocking out.
The Manatees will be opening this show. Doors open at 10:00pm, $5 and 21 and up.
Friday 12/9 Staff will be playing a free show at Shangri-La Records. Staff features Tim Prudhomme and Geoff Soule from Fuck and Tripp Lamkins of The Grifters. Staff will start playing at 6:00pm, but everything in Shangri-la will be 20% from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.
Later that evening, head to The Lamplighter (1702 Madison Ave.) for Modern Convenience, Gaddafi Girls, Eric Blevins, and DJs Kitchen Sink and Red Radio. This show is a fundraiser for the Memphis Socialist Party. The cover for this will be $3. The show starts at 10:00pm and is 21 and up.
Saturday 12/10 Unknown Hinson will be playing the Hi-tone (1913 Poplar Ave.).
