Trashy Creatures Records Labor Day Sale, Glorie Fundraiser, and This Week’s Shows

Hey everyone!  School is back in swing, so expect the timing of my posts to be a bit strange as I adjust to my brand new schedule.  With that being said, the folks from Trashy Creatures Records are having a Labor Day Sale from now until Tuesday September 4th!!!!

All t-shirts and CDs are $6, and cassettes are only $3!  Get some great music from Tiger High, Hot Freak Nation, and The Late Show at a discounted price!

Glorie EP Fundraiser

Speaking of Memphis bands, Glorie currently has an indiegogo page set up to raise money to fund their upcoming EP Falling.  While they have already reached their $1,000 goal, many of you know that money doesn’t often come easy to Memphis bands.  They have some great incentives up, for those interested in donating to them.  Check out their indiegogo page here!

Ascent of Everest, The Switchblade Kid, Clay Cantrell

Thursday night (8/31) at Murphy’s (1589 Madison Ave.), Nashville, Tennessee’s Ascent of Everest will be rolling through town!  These guys have an atomospheric sound that borders on ambient.  Fans of Radiohead will really dig these guys.  Did I mention they have a violin and cello?  They’ll be joined by Harry Koniditsiotis’ newest project The Switchblade Kid, who are gearing up for a Rock For Love performance. Mash up the sounds of Koniditsiotis’ previous bands The Angel Sluts and Twin Pilot and you know what to expect when you hear The Switchblade Kid.  Clay Cantrell will also be playing.  Cover is $5 and the show should start in the 10:00 hour.  Murphy’s is a 21 and up venue.

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears, Dikes of Holland

Also Thursday (8/30) at The Hi-tone (1913 Poplar Ave.), Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears will be returning to Memphis!  Bring your dancing shoes, and pick up a copy of their most recent record Scandalous!  They will be joined by fellow Austin, Texas band Dikes of Holland.   Cover for this one is $10 and things should kick of at 9:00pm.  The Hi-tone is an 18 and up venue.

Ron-A-Thon

I’m pretty sure that I remember hearing commercials for Cheapskates (1576 Getwell Rd.) on the radio before I even had pubes.  Now Ron Hale, owner of Cheapskates needs our help to pay off some medical bills.  August 31-September 2 at The Poplar Lounge (2586 Poplar Ave.), a three day benefit featuring music, comedy, and a silent auction will occur:

Due to health issues and being an uninsured small business owner & musician, Ron needs our help to pay down some hospital bills. Many dear friends have donated their time to play these shows.

MUSIC! COMEDY! RAFFLE! SILENT AUCTION and more surprises!!$10 donation at the door, and an optional $25 donation will get you a wristband for all three days.

Friday – Aug 31: Zydefaux, Paving Funk, Whatever Dude, Memphis Killharmonic.
Saturday – Sept 1: 3 Man Riot!, Joecephus and the GeorgeJonestown Massacre, Pengea, Anti G, DJ Willow, comedy by Jane Haze.

Richard James & The Special Riders
A birthday party? The Cove (2559 Broad Ave.)? Richard James & The Special Riders?  Yep, it’s all true and happening Saturday September 1st for Anna Steven’s birthday.  The Special Riders will be joined by new Memphis band Time.  This show will kick off at 10:00pm and will most assuredly go late!  $5 cover, and The Cove is a 21 and up venue!
Also of note:
So I dropped the ball and forgot to mention Good Luck Dark Star’s show last Saturday night at The Buccaneer even after Lisa Isbell contacted me about it.  If you think you may find your way to Jackson, Tennessee tomorrow night (8/29) then head to the Downtown Tavern (208 N. Liberty St.).  If you feel like a special road trip, go show one of our best hometown bands a little Memphis love in Jackson!
There is also a free 901 Day show at Shangri-La (1916 Madison Ave.).  Jeff Hulett, Chad Nixon, and Caleb Sweazey will be performing from 3 to 5.  Go out, buy some records, and hear some great local music.

Glorie Cooper Young Fest photos, Jim Dickinson Folk Festival

After a full day of recovery from this year’s Cooper Young Fest, I’m back up, running, and ready to post.  Here are some photos of Glorie from the main stage.

It’s hard to believe that it has been more than two years since Jim Dickinson passed away.  Tonight at the Levitt Shell in Overton Park is the Jim Dickinson Folk FestivalNorth Mississippi All Stars, Lucero, Mojo Nixon, Sons of Mudboy, Jimbo Mathis and the Tri-State Coalition, and Shannon McNally will all be performing.  This show kicks off at 6:30, is free, and completely family friendly.

While most of you probably don’t need a reminder about this, Gonerfest kicks off this Thursday at the Gazebo on the corner of Cooper and Young with Jack Oblivian and LimesClick this link for a full schedule of this year’s Gonerfest events.  Also there are six days left to fund the Jack Oblivian, Harlan T. Bobo, Limes kickstarter page to raise money for their European tour.

Cooper Young Festival, Those Darlins, Attic Ted

Gearing up for Cooper Young Festival today?  Get to the stage by the Memphis Drum Shop at 12:30 for Tout Le Mon.  Then head over to the Main Stage at 1:15 for Glorie.

At 5:15 return to the Main Stage for Steve Selvidge.

While walking around Cooper Young Festival, be on the lookout for David Johnson.  We interviewed him during our Rock for Love coverage, and he will have a booth set up today selling his pottery.  (Perhaps his ceramic flasks).

After Cooper Young Festival ends, you have several options:

Head to the The Frame (961 Meda St.) for Attic Ted, Warm Girls, and The PanSexuals.  This show will start at 7:30 and cover will be based off donations for the bands.

The Hi-tone has Those Darlins tonight with opening band Wagons.  Doors open at 9pm, cover is $10, 18 and up.

Hope to see you all out today and tonight!

Rock for Love Day 2 Gazebo show!

Did you miss the show at the Gazebo on the corner of Cooper and Young?  Bad move!  Here’s a little of what you missed….

If you’re sad that you missed Richard James and the Special Riders and Sharp Balloons, I can’t help you, however I can advise you to head to the Hi-tone now!  DJ Lady Problems is already spinning records, Arma Secrata should be taking the stage soon, and you will also be treated to performances from Glorie (featuring Rock for Love’s own Jeff Hulett), Cities Aviv, The Angelsluts, and Pezz (featuring Rock for Love’s own Marv Stockwell).  Dr. Harold Toboggans will be the emcee tonight, and word on the street is that he and DJ Lady Problems will be wrestling in spaghetti!  Cover is $10, so come out and let’s help the Church Health Center reach its goal of $40,000!

Also, if you missed today’s day show, another one is happening tomorrow at Shangri-la Records at 1pm featuring Bake Sale, Wuvbirds, The Perfect Vessels, and Silver Seeds.  Also 20% of Shangri-la’s sales tomorrow go to the Church Health Center!  Hope to see you all out tonight and tomorrow day!

Marv Stockwell

Last night, a rather jubilant Marv Stockwell spoke a little bit about why he works for the Church Health Center.

“Long ago I kind of made the decision in life, there’s nothing wrong with being corporate PR for Fedex, but that’s not what I’m here to do.  I want to go to work in a place where I feel like I’m contributing to doing something that helps people. Working with Hulett is just icing on the cake.”

Last year, Rock For Love 4 made $39,200 (which included one night of a very packed Hi-tone with Lucero).  This year’s goal is $40,000.  According to Stockwell, $40,000 could run the Church Health Center for two weeks and treat 1400 patients!  Also Stockwell’s band Pezz will be playing Rock for Love tonight at the Hi-tone with The Angelsluts, Cities Aviv, Glorie, Arma Secrata, and DJ Lady ProblemsDr. Harold Toboggans will be tonight’s emcee, and word on the streets is that he and DJ Lady Problems will be wrestling in spaghetti.  Doors open at 9pm.  Also don’t forget about the free show at the gazebo at the corner of Cooper and Young at 5:30 with Richard James and the Special Riders and Sharp Balloons.
